Jeera Rice / Cumin Rice / Jeera Pulao

Jeera Rice Recipe by Lax Kitchen

I make flavourful Jeera Rice for a change when I get bored with regular white rice. It goes well with any gravy which we usually prepare for variety rice. I make jeera rice very often with regular white rice and sometimes with basmati rice. I prefer alternative method(see notes) for regular cooking rice.

I want more cumin flavour on my dish. So, I am adding only a bay leaf not bunch of whole spices here because whole spices will be dominant over cumin. But its totally your choice.

Ingredients
Basmati rice- 1 cup
Jeera / Cumin seeds- 2 tsp
Ghee- 1 tbs
Green Chilli- 1 (slitted)
Salt- to taste
Instructions
1. Wash rice 2 to 3 times and soak in water for minimum 30 min to 1 hour. After that drain all water from rice and keep it aside. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add bay leaf and green chilli.

2. When it splutters add cumin seeds. Allow it to crackle completely. Now add the rice. Saute it for few seconds.

3. Add 1 1/2 cups of water and enough salt. Allow this to boil. Now reduce the flame to low and then close pressure cooker with weight on. Let it cook for 10 min without whistle.

A simple and flavourful jeera rice is ready. Have it with dal or any gravy and spicy potato fry as side.

Lax Notes
* If you want you can add some onions along with bay leaf and green chilli.
* If possible add hot water to cook rice. It helps rice to cook easily.
Alternative Method:
* Cook rice separately with enough salt and water. Now heat a pan with a tbs of ghee. After ghee is heated, add cumin seeds, let it splutters. Then add the cooked rice and give it a stir. That's it. Dish is ready to serve.
